Conservation data for everyone
Your contribution to comprehensive environmental protection in OpenStreetMap
Our goal: Reliable nature conservation data in OpenStreetMap
Together with FOSSGIS, we would like to make nature conservation data, such as protected areas and specific usage regulations, available in the OpenStreetMap (OSM) in an up-to-date and correct way – and to do so nationwide! OSM is one of the world’s largest, freely accessible geo-databases and serves as the basis for numerous tour and planning applications. When nature conservation data is fully integrated here, everyone benefits: from nature conservation administrations to users of outdoor and planning apps.
The project: Efficient integration of conservation data into OSM
To ensure that conservation data can be maintained comprehensively and sustainably together with the OSM community, we want to establish a coordinating body and develop a user-friendly tool. This coordinating body is responsible for communication, technical support and training between conservation administrations and the OSM community. The planned user-friendly editor, integrated into the Digitize-Patform, should also enable administrations to provide data easily and precisely without much effort.
Our planned structure
- Coordinating body for nature conservation and the OSM community
Through knowledge exchange, mediation and training, this office brings all relevant stakeholders to the table. Here, common standards are to be developed and conflicts resolved to ensure the best possible data quality. It is also intended to be a contact point for direct help when working with OSM.
- Technical development and data maintenance
Based on the knowledge gained, an intuitive, technical support for data maintenance in OSM will be developed. In this way, we create a sustainable basis for the maintenance of up-to-date and correct nature conservation data.
Your opportunity: Cooperate and achieve great things together
This project, as well as OpenStreetMap, thrives on cooperation. Together with conservation administrations, technical partners and the committed OSM community, we want to make conservation information accessible and usable for everyone. To this end, we are looking for committed partners for long-term cooperation and financing. Support by finding a suitable funding program is a central step in achieving our goal.
