Enter protection purposes for fauna, flora and habitats on the Digitize-Platform:
The crucial phase of our NUDGE project
From now on, all users can enter protection purposes for fauna, flora and habitats on the Digitize-Platform. With this, our NUDGE project enters the next phase, where we collect data to define key attributes and link the output to platforms and internet services.
Our System
For data collection, we have developed a hybrid system that minimizes the maintenance effort for protected areas as well as data preparation and provision.
The first component of the system is a crowdsourcing element that provides a selection of species from the Red List (with German and Latin names) as well as the FFH habitat types. Through the fixed species lists, we ensure that each species and each protection purpose is only once and clearly present in the system. In the spirit of a wiki principle, this list is expanded to include images and general descriptions created and maintained by the users. All users can thus add images and general text to species that are then available to everyone else. This creates a jointly maintained database that is constantly being expanded and improved.
This list of species, images and descriptions can then be used by all other users and supplemented with specific information on the conservation purpose for their protected areas.
This second component of protected area and species-specific information includes direct links to protected area rules as well as behavioural advice that goes beyond legal requirements. Further information on sensitive times, special properties or observation points can also be added.

In the coming months, we will analyze and evaluate the collected data to enable the simplest and fastest possible input that covers the most important information for our purpose. By statistically evaluating the growing data pool, we will determine which attributes are used most often. On this basis, a content and technical evaluation is carried out in cooperation with partner platforms and web services. We will publish these results on an ongoing basis.
Our goal is to create a comprehensive data set and to have the input functionality tested by as many users as possible.
The NUDGE project is funded by the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation.
